They concluded that exercise reduced blood pressure even in hypertensive persons. - Stronger joints. The Journal of the American Medical Association published a study of the effects of aerobic and resistance exercise on adults with knee osteoarthritis. The people studied had radiographic evidence of osteoarthritis, pain, and felt some degree of disability from their condition. The study concluded that an exercise program helped improve physical performance and decreased pain. The researchers concluded that exercise should be prescribed as part of the treatment for knee osteoarthritis. It goes without saying that it should also be prescribed to help prevent diseases of the joints from ever beginning.
- Prevents and Restores Age-Related Declines in Endothelium-Dependent Vasodilation. The American Heart Association studied 68 men and found this to be true. But what does it mean for you and me. - Helps Fight Depression. The British Journal of Psychiatry reported two groups of patients suffering from depression. One group attended regular exercise classes while the other didn’t. Stomach Exercise Equipment and Aerobic Fitness
Stomach exercise equipment fills the airwaves. Any time of the day or night you can find infomercials pitching the next abs machine. Obviously these are hot-selling items. So, why don’t we see more people with flat abs?
Amazingly, people continue to spend millions of dollars on high-priced abs devices without really thinking it through. It really is a basic principle of human physiology that you can spot reduce with abdominal exercises. So forget doing hundreds of sit-ups or spending a few hundred dollars on the latest abs fad gimmick.
It is aerobic fitness that is the key to a flat stomach. In other words you are burning fat when your heart is beating faster than normal not when you are twisting or crunching your abdominal muscles.
So, should you become a marathon runner to burn fat and get healthy? Well, maybe. I’ve done a few marathons and just training for one will really get you in better shape. But there is a problem if your fitness program is not properly balanced with aerobic exercises and resistance training exercise.
You need to be building muscle and burning fat to reach optimum health and to look and feel your best. But frankly, this is a challenge. As someone who owns two gym memberships I know how difficult of a balance this can be. It seems like I’m either focusing on running or lifting.
This is why I’m turning to home gym solutions. I’ve found that the new products on the market surpass what you can accomplish in an expensive health club. I’m not even renewing the contract with my personal trainer that expires in four months. It has just become too easy, effective, and efficient to workout at home.
I started my home gym with a flat screen TV and a DVD player. I’ve purchased about five fitness DVD’s so far and a few pieces of equipment that have all been less than $200. I’m transitioning away from the health club and into my own in-home workout studio.

One person gave it a one star and said that Tony Horton needs to “lay off the caffeine and supplements and calm down.” Ok, maybe it isn’t for everyone. Tony Horton is a fitness fanatic and he is motivated to help people get in shape. If you don’t want an exciting fitness coach on your exercise DVD don’t get P90X.

Aerobic Fitness And Your Personal Fitness Program
Aerobic fitness is a matter of life and death. That’s because this term or others like it such as cardiorespiratory fitness or cardiovascular fitness describe the health of your heart, lungs, and circulatory system. In other words we’re talking about keeping you vertical here!
Neglecting a personal fitness program that includes aerobic exercise is to neglect your heart and lungs that keep you breathing and moving. One indicator that you may be doing this is that you fatigue easily walking up a flight of stairs or doing a simple everyday task such as walking from the grocery store to the car carrying a bag of groceries.
Improving your cardiovascular fitness not only gives you more stamina for climbing stairs it also helps prevent heart disease and diabetes. Aerobic fitness is one of the major factors in cardiovascular as well as overall general health because it has a positive effect on certain risk factors such as obesity, hypertension, insulin resistance, elevated triglycerides and LDL cholesterol.
I know there’s a big push today toward building muscle through resistance training. This should definitely be a part of your personal fitness program. But there are some programs today that totally disregard aerobic conditioning. Nationally recognized organizations such as the American Council on Exercise (ACE) and the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the two personal trainer certifications that I hold, disagree with this. They both teach that cardiorespiratory fitness serves as a foundation for all other fitness and exercise programs.
I say all of that because there are some popular programs that will just have you doing pull-ups and push-ups with no consideration of your aerobic endurance. A good fitness program will include both resistance and aerobic training.
Two often neglected aspects of an optimum aerobic conditioning program are the warm-up and cool-down. Both of these will help you maximize the safety and efficiency of your workouts. It is far too common for someone to get excited about exercise and jump on an elliptical trainer, go as hard as possible, hop off and take a shower while their heart is still at maximum heart rate. This leads to injury, frustration, and quitting.
You also want to choose a variety of exercises such as walking, running, rowing, swimming, etc. This prevents boredom which is a leading cause of people discontinuing with their personal fitness program. By choosing different exercises you will also prevent your body from adapting to one exercise and not reaping sufficient benefits during your exercise session.
Many people are challenged with finding time to exercise. It then becomes very important to maximize the time spent on an exercise session. In fact one popular exercise DVD includes a 20 Minute Full-Body Workout. Beachbody Turbo Jam actually includes all five of these workouts:

Local Gyms, Aerobic Fitness, And Saving Money
How many local gyms have you belonged to? I currently pay for two memberships for myself, one for my wife, and two for my daughter. We have benefited from these through the years but I’m starting to rethink paying for a gym membership. Several factors have me reconsidering this monthly bill.
Let me start by saying that I’m not thinking about not working out. I can’t afford to do that. You see, I gain weight by just walking past the ice cream freezer in a grocery store. I must work out.
One factor that will probably cause me not to renew my gym membership in August ( I have until next January for the other one) is simple economics. Health clubs and fitness facilities are costing more to use their barbells, dumbbells, treadmills, ellipticals, etc. Sure, some gyms have a great selection of weights and aerobic fitness equipment but you’ll pay a premium to sweat there. Additionally, the price of gas isn’t going down anytime soon and you have to figure that in to your fitness expenses.
I also don’t like waiting to use a piece of equipment. One of the gyms I belong to is crazy crowded after work. You can spend as much time waiting as working out. There are also people with no gym etiquette that must be dealt with. Not to mention that gyms are notorious for harboring germs. With the rise in MRSA infections, you really need to be careful.
Also, depending on where you live, driving to and from the gym can waste a lot of time. Both of my gyms really cost me in driving time. This is maybe just my own little pet peeve but it is frustrating when you consider that some days my driving time equals or surpasses my workout time.
But the biggest reason I’m not renewing my gym memberships is this: I have built a better and more efficient home gym. You can get great home gym equipment today that uses minimal space and doesn’t break the bank.
You can actually start very small and build up slowly. Actually you can start with a TV, DVD player, and a dvd. There are some great dvd workouts on the market such as the Beachbody Insanity workout. The workouts are fun, the music is great and Chalene is perky and encouraging without being annoying. The Maximum Results set is nice because it helps fight boredom since you can use different workouts. My favorite from the set is “Punch, Kick, and Jam.”
For those who worry that the workouts will be too”dance-y,” never fear! I’m definitely a “non-dancer” but I had no problems with the workout (though it did take me some extra time to get the “pump” move down).
